Policy & Advocacy

MPA4Change aims to drive action for the integration of climate change adaptation plans into relevant policy frameworks at all levels, both in the Mediterranean and EU context, as well as to leverage funding and active participation, in line with regional frameworks such as the Barcelona Convention and the Union for the Mediterranean’s GreenerMed Agenda.

For this end, we carry out different actions to stress the need to act against the climate emergency, promote the project solutions as consolidated tools for this end, participate in key events and liaise with interested parties and institutions to get the necessary support to achieve our objectives.

So far, MPA4Change has produced one policy brief and is in the process of publishing a second one, as well as to organise a dedicated policy bootcamp to inform about our latest developments in the field of policy and advocacy.

100MPA MEDALLIANCE: EMPOWERING MPA MANAGERS FOR CLIMATE RESILIENCE

The 100MPA MedAlliance is a collaborative inititative developed in the framework of MPA4Change that will enable to extend the scope of MPA4Change in time and achieve the integration of climate change adaptation strategies in 100 Mediterranean MPAs by the year 20230.

Through this first policy brief, MPA4Change wants to build momentum and political support for the 100MPA MedAlliance, encouraging MPA managers to take action and urging governments, agencies, and funders to provide the policy, technical and financial backing needed to reach 100 climate-ready MPAs by 2030.

FROM TOOLS TO ACTION: SCALING CLIMATE ADAPTATION THROUGH THE MPA4CHANGE TOOLKITS

MPAs are recognised as important Nature‑based Solutions for climate adaptation, but their integration into policy remains inconsistent, and many lack the tools needed to act. MPA4Change responds by providing validated toolkits aligned with key EU and Mediterranean frameworks, helping translate policy commitments into practical measures.

The brief “From tools to action: scaling climate adaptation through the MPA4Change Toolkits” calls on policymakers to adopt these tools, on managers to apply and share them, and on donors to support long‑term monitoring and capacity building. With these instruments embedded in governance, MPAs can become strong drivers of climate adaptation and resilient coastal communities.

Policy Bootcamp

The MPA4Change Policy Bootcamp – Marine Protected Areas: facing the climate emergency was an event organised online on 17 December 2025 as part of the MPA4Change project. Its objective was to bring together policymakers, MPA managers, and regional stakeholders to exchange insights and strategies for accelerating climate adaptation across Mediterranean Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).

The session focused on practical tools, case studies, and advocacy strategies, framed within the 100MPA MedAlliance, a collaborative initiative to scale up climate adaptation planning across the Mediterranean by 2030. It also prioritised the discussion of key policy recommendations, exploring their feasibility and identifying barriers and opportunities for implementation at both national and regional levels.

Reference materials

Previous to the bootcamp, participants received the Participant´s guide and a set of factsheets summarising the MPA4Change Toolkits. These reference materials illustrate how tested and validated tools can support the integration of climate adaptation and mitigation into MPA policy and management.

Additionally, during the Bootcamp, the MPA4Change Policy Briefs were used as a basis for the presentation of the policy recommendations and the knowledge exchange carried out during the participatory sessions.

To end with, a Bootcamp Outcomes Report was generated to consolidate the information conveyed during the event, session dynamics, participant´s profiles and main takeaways from the discussions that took place.
