Policy & Advocacy

MPA4Change aims to drive action for the integration of climate change adaptation plans into relevant policy frameworks at all levels, both in the Mediterranean and EU context, as well as to leverage funding and active participation, in line with regional frameworks such as the Barcelona Convention and the Union for the Mediterranean’s GreenerMed Agenda.

For this end, we carry out different actions to stress the need to act against the climate emergency, promote the project solutions as consolidated tools for this end, participate in key events and liaise with interested parties and institutions to get the necessary support to achieve our objectives.

So far, MPA4Change has produced one policy brief and is in the process of publishing a second one, as well as to organise a dedicated policy bootcamp to inform about our latest developments in the field of policy and advocacy.

100MPA MEDALLIANCE: EMPOWERING MPA MANAGERS FOR CLIMATE RESILIENCE

The 100MPA MedAlliance is a collaborative inititative developed in the framework of MPA4Change that will enable to extend the scope of MPA4Change in time and achieve the integration of climate change adaptation strategies in 100 Mediterranean MPAs by the year 20230.

Through this first policy brief, MPA4Change wants to build momentum and political support for the 100MPA MedAlliance, encouraging MPA managers to take action and urging governments, agencies, and funders to provide the policy, technical and financial backing needed to reach 100 climate-ready MPAs by 2030.

FROM TOOLS TO ACTION: INTEGRATING CLIMATE ADAPTATION TOOLKITS INTO MEDITERRANEAN MARINE PROTECTED AREA POLICY

Although Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are recognized by EU and regional frameworks as key Nature-based Solutions for ecosystem-based adaptation, their integration into climate policy remains fragmented. Most MPAs lack operational tools and systematic planning for climate adaptation, prompting the integration of consolidated tools to achieve this goal.

MPA4Change provides MPA managers with a suit of validated Toolkits that align with major policy frameworks including the Barcelona Convention’s IMAP, the EU Biodiversity Strategy and Restoration Law and the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, among others. They provide the operational means to implement these strategies, bridging the gap between high-level commitments and local action. Capacity-building resources and community engagement tools further empower MPAs to act as effective Nature-based Solutions for climate resilience, integrating local ecological knowledge and fostering stewardship.

This brief calls on policymakers to mandate toolkit integration, MPA managers to adopt and share best practices, and donors to fund long-term monitoring and capacity development. By embedding these validated tools into governance, Mediterranean MPAs can become strategic lighthouses for climate adaptation and sustainable coastal livelihoods.

This brief is being drafted – it will be available through this webpage soon. Please stay tuned.
