MPA4Change’s first policy brief is out, spotlighting a bold new initiative to strengthen climate resilience across the Mediterranean. The brief outlines strategic recommendations for integrating climate adaptation measures into MPAs by calling policy makers and MPA managers to mobilise and endorse the 100MPA MedAlliance.
Calling MPA managers and policy makers to mobilise for climate resilience
A bold new initiative, the 100MPA MedAlliance, is mobilizing Mediterranean Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) to tackle the region’s climate crisis. Launched under the Interreg Euro-MED MPA4Change project, it aims to build a resilient network of 100 MPAs by 2030 and elevate climate adaptation on the political agenda.
Aligned with frameworks like the Barcelona Convention and the EU Biodiversity Strategy, the alliance urges policymakers and funders to support climate-ready MPAs. To seize upcoming opportunities such as the EU Multiannual Financial Framework and COP24, MPA4Change has released the policy brief “100MPA MedAlliance – Empowering MPA Managers for Climate Resilience.”
A Roadmap for climate-resilient MPAs
The policy brief “100MPA MedAlliance – Empowering MPA Managers for Climate Resilience” outlines strategic recommendations for integrating climate adaptation measures into MPAs across the Mediterranean region and addresses the urgent need to overcome governance gaps, technical limitations, and capacity constraints that hinder MPAs from realizing their full potential as tools for climate resilience.
To meet these challenges, the 100MPA MedAlliance is presented as the main vehicle for action. Key recommendations of the policy brief include:
- Endorsing the 100MPA MedAlliance as a collaborative initiative to scale up climate adaptation across the region.
- Strengthening institutional support for MPA managers through targeted training, funding mechanisms, and policy alignment.
- Integrating climate resilience into national and regional marine strategies, in line with the Barcelona Convention and the EU Biodiversity Strategy.
